HUNGRY HURRICANES BLOW AWAY BRICKHILL

Following the trip to the autumnal North the previous week, our intrepid travelling army made the arduous journey East (Bedford) to the home of the Brickhill Wanderers. Brickhill would be an unknown quantity as our paths have not crossed (in league action) previously, but as last week both teams would see an opportunity to move up the table.

Leon and Andy had a full squad to choose from including new starter Jeremy, who had been training with the team recently, so the line-up saw Evan in goal, with Charles, Rocco, Orlando and Freddie in defence. Midfield comprised Asante, Harry, Luke, Francis and Jeremy, with Ryan and Tao sharing forward duties.

In fact, Jeremy set the tone for the match within a few minutes of the start by chasing down a kick and hurling himself in the way of the ball – great play, and a good start to Jeremy’s Hurricanes career. Next, the action moved to the other end of the pitch with a Brickhill ball over the top of the Woburn defence, Evan having to be off his line quickly to block. Shortly after, the Wanderers broke through again with a two-on-two situation, but Captain Rocco did what he does and cleared the danger. Ten minutes in, Francis dispossessed his man, reached the byline and put in a good cross but no Woburn player could reach it. The game had not really settled, and both teams had corners and goalmouth scrambles to deal with. Halfway through the first half, Woburn took a throw into the Brickhill penalty area and for some reason the Wanderers defender handled it. Penalty to Woburn – up stepped Luke and buried the ball in the bottom corner. 0-1, and Woburn started playing the best football of the match. The period of domination continued and three minutes later, Francis chased down a hopeful punt forward and forced the defender into a mistake. Francis stole the ball away, headed into the box and calmly slotted past the keeper as he tried to narrow the angle. 0-2, Lions purring, Wanderers wondering what had happened. The home team immediately made several substitutions and nearly halved the deficit straight away as their no. 2 glided past the Hurricanes defence and slammed a shot goalwards – it ricocheted off of the crossbar (which may still be wobbling now) to safety. Then another slick move saw Brickhill beat the Hurricanes’ offside trap and two players bore down on goal. Evan was quick out, but as one passed to the other he could only watch as… the ball slid past the post! A huge let-off for Woburn, and going into half-time their two goal cushion was intact.

The second period was a quieter affair than the first as the Hurricanes looked to protect their lead, whilst the Wanderers searched for an opening. With only a few minutes remaining, Woburn pushed forward into the Brickhill penalty area again, and following a scramble Tao smashed the ball home. 0-3, and the victory was secure. There was just enough time for Brickhill to grab a consolation from a corner, and the final score of 1-3 gave the Hurricanes their first Division 2 win! Credit to Brickhill Wanderers for never giving up, but the plaudits must go to Leon, Andy and the team. Forza Woburn!
