League game

LIONESSES v Evergreen Eagles FC at Aspley Guise 29/01/17 2pm KO. Attendance: 24 Conditions: wet, cold, grey, perfect for a good game of football!

Squad: LEANNE, BRITNEY, JADE, RACHEL, ALICE, CARRIE, CASEY, AMY, LAUREN, MADISON, GEORGIE, MILLIE, NIKITA.

Billed as the ‘Top of the table clash!’ and it did not disappoint!!

This was the first time these two teams had met and we knew it was going to be a tough one. After some soul searching from the Lionesses after last weeks under par performance in the cup, it was time to show some real character and bounce back quickly to winning ways  (although I think it was good for us to have such a hard game last week! ) So it did not look good when within 2 minutes of the start we gifted them a goal with some shall we say casual defensive play. 0-1! Time to roll up the sleeves and show some spirit, 2 minutes later Amy had a shot which the Evergreen keeper miss judged and it bounced over the line! (How lucky was that?) 1-1 after 5minutes, back to nil – nil came the cry from the Lionesses dugout, it looked like it was going to be end to end stuff and so it was. We had to be solid at the back but this was not easy on a very wet fast pitch where made it easy to make a mistake on. Our back four of Britney , Jade , Rachel , and Alice were made to work very hard by the Evergreen front two who made it clear they knew where the Woburn goal was!

Amy started to find her range & and on 21minutes the Lionesses got their noses in front for the first time, 2-1, 5 mins later Amy got half a yard and did it again 3-1.

Everyone was pulling together and the flowing quick passing football started to return to our play as we relaxed slightly and broke from the midfield down both wings with some pin point passes from Carrie, Casey & Amy, which gave Lauren , Madison & Georgie license to use their pace and shooting abilities.

The Evergreen goal keeper & defence had other ideas and were making some great tackles and saves, the half ended after Madison got her goal to make it 4-1 to the Lionesses ( slightly flattering as explained at half time by Manager and Coach! )

Evergreen were never going to give up and it was overheard that they were told they were ‘still in it!’ You bet they were!!! as even when coach Pat had said we now have to win the second half we decided to let them score on the 47th & 55th minute to allow them to get right back in it! 4-3!!!!! With much too long still to play the momentum was now with them going down the famous Aspley slope.

The next 20 minutes felt like forever! As they threw the kitchen sink & a few fantastic corners at us.

Thank god Amy was not finished as although she had her hat-trick she still wanted more and made  it 5-3 on 63mins just to settle down the home crowds nerves. Well played to both Millie & Nikita for playing an important part in this very tight but important fixture. We needed 13 talented squad players to win this and they did it.

Final score 5-3 which seemed much closer than the score suggests and sets up a return game at Evergreen in a few weeks. A really competitive game from 2 very good teams who both wanted to win!

Team dedicated the victory to Lizzie Richardson who could not be with us today as she was on special professional duties in London. Full story soon ! (congrats to her, all at Woburn proud, but hope to see her soon! )

P.O.M. LIONESSES – AMY

P.O.M. EVERGREEN – The Goal keeper with some very good shot stopping & reaction saves!

Thanks to all the pre & after match helpers for making it a successful afternoon for the home team.
