League match

With slightly depleted numbers, and the absence of our normal coach Dean, who was undergoing some training of his own, we faced Mid Beds Tigers this weekend.

It was a match of two halves for the Lionesses.

A change in direction of play

I thought we played the better football in the first half with constant attacks on goal from Jasmine and Kitty, which on other occasions would have found the back of the net. Some great defensive work by the Kinns twins and some lovely distribution work by Olivia, sitting in front of the back two, kept play flowing in the right direction. A beautiful set of passes between Izzy, Jasmine and Kitty, involving a lovely back heel from Jasmine, drew us level at 1 all, before the whistle blew and the girls headed off for half-time oranges and a quick team talk.

The second half saw Charlotte, team captain, gaining in strength giving her the confidence to hassle the Tigers’ attack, but the opposition had rallied with fresh legs while our girls were starting to show signs of tiredness. After holding her own for much of the first half, Freya had to watch as one of the Tigers sent a beautiful high wonder strike, from about the half-way line, into the top of the goal; an impossible one for many a goalie ! The play was a little more disjointed in the second half, with gaps starting to open up between defence, mid field and attack but Freya remained determined, kept her head up and the whistle finally blew at 3-1.

Though the girls were clearly tired by the end, it had been a good opportunity for the them to get plenty of pitch time against a fully-manned team and to try different positions and formations which we can take on board going forward. At this stage in the season the fact that they lasted the distance with few subs, bodes well.

On this occasion, the Lionesses had to submit to the Tigers.

Gary and I awarded Girl of the Match today to Charlotte – keep it up !
