Match Report

The visit of Evergreen Eagles to the Common provided the WW Lionesses with an opportunity to improve on their performance from the reverse fixture.

The opposition arrived under-strength which enabled the WW Lionesses forwards to run the EE defence ragged. Within 15 minutes Eddie (Georgia), playing on the right wing., had scored two goals. Over the next 20 minutes WW Lionesses had a further 12 opportunities on goal which weren’t converted. EE seized on this and with only two players in the box they managed to convert their one chance on goal. With the score at 2-1 the WW Lionesses tightened up and failed to keep possession for much of the rest of the first half.

The half time team talk revolved around keeping the ball and making the opposition work harder. Throughout the first half we were two passes off being lethal…

Within seconds of the second half starting the ladies looked much more focused and the passing was much more crisp.

Gwen scored a great goal from the edge of the box (moving her to third in the League for goals).

Dom found herself through on goal, having gone passed the keeper, only to be denied by the EE goalkeeper grabbing her and throwing her to the floor. A penalty was awarded and Alice stepped up – and from only one step –  kept up her record of not missing penalties.

Minutes later, another penalty was awarded. This time Jay stepped up to the spot and buried the ball past the goalkeeper.

On the 80th minute, the moment of the match came. The ball was cleared by the EE defenders from a WW corner. Lucy met the ball on the halfway line and chipped the ball over the opposition midfield and defence perfectly for Dom to meet ultimately finish.

Good result – great second half.

Tough game next week against the league leaders who haven’t lost a league match this season. Big match players needed! Who’s going to step up in training this week?!
