Certainly not an “El Classico” as Woburn began the defence of the county cup. Both teams battled a strong wind blowing up the Aspley Common Hill. The play was even, possibly even favouring Leighton in the opening quarter so probably not a total shock that Leighton scored on 18 minutes. 0 – 1. Woburn did seem to wake up then as Casey and Amy went close a couple of times each and on 33 minutes substitute Georgie ran well at the Leighton defence. 3 minutes later though it was Casey who grabbed a lifeline for Woburn as she scored from the spot after the Leighton keeper had clipped Emily as she tried to save. Nice touch at half time as the Leighton manager was clear with the referee that it was the correct decision.
Woburn tightened up in the second half whilst still allowing Grace and Chloe A, on her 250th appearance, to get forward. Amy and Molly both found the woodwork before a fine Molly corner was header onto the crossbar by Alice who made no mistake with a second header. 2 – 1. Woburn again pressed and a second penalty for handball seemed likely to allow Woburn to increase the lead but Carrie’s take was well saved. However on 84 minutes Casey scrambled the ball home and finally the game looked won. 3 – 1. Woburn should be back to full strength next week as these 2 teams battle again this time in the league.
