LIONS ENJOY ELEVENSES WITH COUGARS

As the half-term week receded into the distance, Woburn & Wavendon Hurricanes made their way back to school a few days early – Oakgrove School to be precise, where the City Colts Cougars awaited. The Cougars had had a mixed start to the season with one win sandwiched between a pair of losses, so would be looking to impress in their first game at home. Woburn were missing the holidaying Freddie and long-term injury absentee Kian, although Kian and his family came along to cheer on the boys which was appreciated by the team.

The Hurricanes were once again out of the traps slowly despite the later kick-off time and soon found themselves 2-0 down. However they soon regained parity. A smart move saw a trademark Mitchell piledriver pull one back for 2-1, then Asante drove down the left wing, slipped the ball to Alphaeus who coolly side-footed home. 2-2. Just when it looked as if Woburn would go through the gears and purr into the lead, the comeback stalled – a Cougars corner was bundled in at the near post, 3-2. However, just before the half-time whistle a Hurricanes attack saw the ball fall to Harry in the box and he too managed to bundle it home. 3-3 at the break, a breathless half of end-to-end football.

Could the second half live up to the first? Well, within a few minutes of the restart Alphaeus scored one of the goals of the season. In years to come, this goal could be revered in the same way as John Barnes’ Maracana masterpiece, and Robin Friday’s volley against Tranmere at Elm Park. Picking up the ball in his own half, Alphaeus set off on what can only be described by this correspondent as a ‘mazy dribble’, dancing through the Cougars’ midfield and defence before tucking the ball into the welcoming net. 3-4, Liquid Football.

Cougars fought back and shortly the scores were level following a sweet left foot curler. 4-4, stalemate again. Jeremy stepped up and had two efforts in quick succession to no avail, before Asante set off down the touchline and played in Alphaeus for his hat-trick. 4-5. There was more to come from Asante, who notched his own hat-trick of assists as his shot fell to Jeremy to slam home. 4-6. Jeremy grabbed his second slotting under the keeper to wrap up the game, 4-7, and that was that. So, just your average run-of-the-mill 11 goal thriller, then, and Woburn yet again overturn a deficit to prevail. Fair play to the Cougars for a good contest, next up will be our old foes from Moretonville, the Tornadoes. Until then…
