Cup 1st Round

A crisp autumnal morning bathed in sunshine, saw the Whirlwinds start this seasons cup adventure.

Whirlwinds started fairly well, controlling possession but not creating enough chances for their early dominance of the ball, mostly balls through the centre, skidded off the dewy grass through to the opposition. Sundon for their part were causing a few problems in midfield and out on the right, mainly due to poor positional play from the home side. Finally the breakthrough came, a superb lobbed pass from Billy over the top of the defence, which Sam sprung on to and slotted in 1-0. The home side were now well on top and quickly added a second, when Ajiri pounced on a defensive lapse to make it 2-0. Whirlwinds continued to dominate and create lots of chances, failing to increase their lead due to good goalkeeping or some hesitancy in an around the opposing penalty area. Sundon were trying to compete, Nathan called in to action once or twice to make a save. Finally the breakthrough came with Ajiri scoring to make it 3-0, quickly followed up by Sam for 4-0. Just before half time Oliver tapped in from close range after some great work from Sam 5-0.

HT 5-0

The home side came in saying they didn’t think they had played well, which was partly true, it was felt that they hadn’t done well enough in the last third of the pitch, but in general behind that the build up play was very good.

The home side went for the second half with the instruction to be more clinical in around the penalty area, they started in the right vain with Jack M, quickly making it 6-0, then the goal of the day a lovely run and cross by Oliver, after being fed from a neat pass from Billy was volleyed home by Sam to complete his hat trick 7-0. Sundon had a penalty shout turned down after a clumsy challenge in the box, but it was turned down as the attacker’s heavy touch meant the ball wasn’t under his control. Up the other end Jack M it 8 – 0, slotting home after seeing his first effort blocked. Late in the game Sundon got reward for keeping on trying with a late consolation, to make the final score 8-1.

FT 8-1

Scorers : Sam (3), Jack M (2), Ajiri (2), Oliver

Summary : At times we played some sparkling football, although we scored 8 goals, for the chances created, this wasn’t a great return. We need to be make quicker decisions in and around the penalty area, too often we hesitated or took the extra touch which allowed the opposition to close the space down. Against better opposition we won’t get so many chances so we need to make them count.

M.O.T.M : Well done to Jack D who keeps on improving, Jack C who came on early in the 1st half and organised us better from the back, Oliver again covered every blade of grass and added a goal to hiss tally. But M.O.T.M goes to Billy, who dominated in central midfield and created 3 of the goals today with great early distribution.
