Another cup win!
Squad: Charlie, Grace, Chloe A, Michaela, Millie, Georgie, Carrie, Emily, Zoe, Lauren, Molly, Chloe R, Rosie, Leanne, Alice
Goals: Rosie x 1, Charlie GK, x 1, Georgie x 1
When you are away in the cup to the strongest opposition, to have a good start is essential. 90 seconds in, Rosie capped a fine solo run down the left, with a shot to the top right to make it 0-1 to the Lionesses. The pressure was kept on with Molly and Rosie providing the shots, whilst the back 4 worked hard to soak up the pressure from Luton, with Grace the pick of the defenders this week. 27 minutes in, a speculative long range shot from the opposition, that 9 times out of 10 Charlie would have saved, slipped away from her and rolled over the line into the net – just one of those moments, not helped as the ball came out of the sun, with a following wind. The girls impressively rallied around Charlie and continued to dig in with Emily and Zoe now flying towards the opposition goal.
Half time 1-1
Within a minute of the second half, Luton thought they had scored, but a well-positioned referee, adjudged the ball was in Charlie’s hands, when it was knocked from her. Then a moment, most of us have never seen in a match before, in all levels of football, (ironically Leanne has been close to this before), Charlie launched a drop kick downfield. With the wind and the bounce on a pitch, which was much firmer than in previous games, cleared the Luton keeper. 1-2. Chloe R who had a good second half, was on hand if needed! What a goal from a goal keeper! Naturally Charlie was engulfed by the Lionesses, as she made club history. Alice had been introduced in defence and Lauren in midfield, to show composure and slow the game down. But the final goal on a hour, saw a good Carrie direct free kick, hit the far post, the rebound shot from Rosie saved, before Georgie well positioned as usual, directed it home. 1-3. Woburn were in control for most of the last 20 minutes, although Charlie had 1 great save to make.
Well played girls – a disciplined and professional performance!
