A friendly against a team in a lower division presented the opportunity to gave some full games to players who for the few games of the season hadn’t yet completed a full game, and also allowed us to try some players in different positions, a later kick off and some beautiful autumnal sunshine, it was lovely morning for football.
After a slightly ‘off’ performance the week before, Whirlwinds were sent out under no illusions of what was expected from them today, any repeat of the selfish play that had showed it’s ugly head the previous week, would mean a stint on the sidelines watching the game. Thankfully the home team started well the first real attack brought some great combination play, and a cross converted for an early lead. The rest of the half flowed much the same way the home team having around 80% of the possession, but using the ball well and creating chances and converting, 2 goals both from Ajiri & Sam, and a season opener from Oakley, Whirlwinds headed in to half time with a 5 goal advantage.
Half time team talk was simple, the message had got through and this week, we were back to playing as a team. It was a bit too comfortable in the first half, just occasionally we are little sloppy in possession, we felt that the ease of gaining possession back, was leading to some weak decision making. It was decided to take a player off and play the 2nd half with 8 players, to hopefully make the game more competitive, but also sharpen the minds of the home team when in possession.
The 2nd half really followed the pattern of the first Barton got a little more possession but never really threatened, in fact the didn’t get a shot anywhere on target. Whirlwinds were better with the ball and probably created a few more chances in the second half than they did in the first, but with a man short they just didn’t have the numbers in and around the box to take them. However another 3 goals were added without reply, Ajiri & Sam both completing their hat-tricks and T.J opening his Whirlwinds account.
Scorers – Ajiri (3), Sam (3), Oakley, T.J
Summary : Much happier with the team play this week, it’s difficult when the team is comfortable in a game not to try and do too much as individuals, but this week they stuck more to playing as a team, which will serve us much better for tougher tests to come.
M.O.T.M : All players today deserve some praise as they all did as we asked, well done to both T.J an Oakley for opening their season scoring accounts, the goals are being spread around the team which is encouraging. M.O.T.M goes to Jack D, completed is first full game, kept his concentration well, which really improved his positional play and very neat and tidy when he received the ball, well done Jack, you are working hard and learning every week.
