A grey day this time for the trip to Garston and a threat of heavy rain (only a few drops materialised), with the girls on pitch 2 at the excellent Bushey Sports ground – a great banked vantage point was found.
Woburn’s success over the last few years has come from having a solid defence allowing the free flowing football in front of that solid back line. With plenty of strength from Jemma and Carrie, who is able to move the ball from one side or other from the middle. Today the defence had one of their sternest tests, but they were up to the challenge. Possibly one difference being both fullbacks were up for a run down the wing so both Chloe A and Grace could provide the link forward. Millie and Michaela in the centre with different styles and different jobs to do today, demonstrated why they are probably the best central defensive combination around. Millie’s powering headers forward, Michaela even following her attacker to the side for a drink, not taking any chances!
Emily took the attack to Garston in the first minute, with Madison giving the Garston defence a torrid time with her pace and body strength. Chloe A creating 2 earlier chances for Georgie, no goals although on 15 minutes Garston did get a shot in. Grace was next to attack finding the side netting but all adding to the problems for Garston, not sure who to mark next. Chloe R, Amy and Casey all introduced to vary the options.
Half time 0 – 0
Alice came on, still giving us a solid defence and on 50 minutes Molly was there to make it a deserved 0 – 1 lead for The Lionesses. The next notable action was at the opposite end as Grace blocked well. 62 minutes though and Molly had the scent of goal again 0 – 2. Woburn continued to look solid at the back and dangerous in attack but a slight wobble as finally after 413 competitive minutes over a season and a half, Garston breached the Woburn defence 1 – 2. Just when the nerves may have got the better of anyone, Molly smashed in number 3, although it did leave time for 2 Garston chances, the first saved brilliantly at point blank range by Charlie.
Full time 1 – 3
Great team effort!
