HURRICANES HUMBLE HARROLD

After the delights of the ‘Leighton triptych’, Woburn & Wavendon Hurricanes returned to home soil for the visit of Harrold & Carlton Lions. Their opponents are riding high in the league so the final game of 2015 looked set to be a real Christmas cracker.

Fortunately Leon and Andy had a full squad to pick from, so the battle of the Lions could commence, with Woburn having the wind advantage in the first half. Ten minutes in and the breakthrough came, as Ryan struck a screamer from 20 yards over the keeper into the corner of the net! 1-0, and Hurricanes were on top. Two minutes later, a Woburn corner was whipped in by Kamaal, and the wind carried the ball straight into the net to double the lead! 2-0, and wildfire Woburn Lions were purring. Whilst Harrold & Carlton toiled on the heavy pitch, the home team were flowing, and increased their lead through Asante turning the ball in at the back post. 3-0, and a huge turnaround from the previous week’s travails. Jeremy almost made it four with a trademark run and shot, but half-time was reached with no further addition to the score.

The second half would no doubt see a fightback from the second-placed team in the league, and sure enough a mix-up in the Hurricanes’ back line saw the Harrold & Carlton striker sneak in and reduce the deficit. 3-1, plenty of time for a grandstand finish. Midway through the half, Luke pulled off a super save, which kept the cushion at 2 goals and ensured that Woburn would be able to see the game out. Indeed, Asante grabbed his second following some good work by Theo a minute before time. 4-1, the final whistle blew, and Woburn’s best performance of the season saw them go into the winter break with a victory under their belts against a very good team. 2015 ended on a high, and the New Year would see the Hurricanes embark upon more adventures in their quest to rise up Division 2!
