A thoroughly wet miserable afternoon in Kempston on a sodden pitch, which could only be described as a ‘leveller’.
Hurricanes started brightly spraying the ball around the pitch, it was a big pitch and they were enjoying the open spaces. Eastcotts were getting plenty of men behind the ball, it was proving difficult for the away side to find space to penetrate the massed defences. Alex fired over from just outside the box, similarly Louie spooned a left foot shot over. With ten minutes gone the deadlock was broken, Ethan played inside to Alex, who quickly played Louie in the channel, he raced clear of the defence towards the byline, pulled it back to the oncoming Luca who calmly side footed in to the corner for his first goal in claret & blue 0-1.
The rain kept coming and both teams were finding it tough going, Hurricanes still enjoying the vast majority of possession, but still struggling to break through the massed defensive lines. At the other end Eastcotts were quick to break on the counter attack, Hayden pulling off a smart save from a powerful shot. The away side doubled their lead a corner from the right was met just inside the box by Alex to fire home in the left hand corner 0-2. Louie then curled a shot which looked destined for the bottom corner, however the ‘Keeper threw himself to the right and tipped it round the post. Eascotts again looked pacy on the counter a shot from just inside the area stinging Hayden’s palms. Hurricanes then put the game to bed, Louie again running the channel to drive to the byline and clip a perfectly weighted cross to Joe arriving at the far post to volley home 0-3.
Half time team talk centred around trying to move the ball a little quicker, it wasn’t a pitch for quick feet and skill.
The second half got underway, following mainly the pattern of the first, Hurricanes trying to play football, but the energy sapping pitch was taking its toll, and the usual quality and precision of the away sides attacking play was missing. It was Eascotts who surprisingly got the next goal, a clear foul on Kieran was let go by the Referee, who then blew up for a foul as the Eastcotts player was challenged coming away with the ball. Free kick, centre of goal 25 yards out, well struck bounced and skidded in front of Hayden, the ball wriggling from his hands and in 1-3.
It could have been the catalyst for a come back from the home side, but it was quickly put to bed, a cross from Benji, to a deflection and looped up, Louie rose the highest and flicked his header in to the roof of the net 1-4. Buoyed by the goal the away team pushed on looking for more, enjoying some space down the flanks, Louie fired just wide, with Benji in a better position. Benji then had the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled offside in a very tight decision. The goal of the game came in the last few minutes, Ethan sliding a perfectly weighted ball to Louie, the type the striker thrives on and he took the ball in stride and smashed a right footed shot across the keeper in to the top left hand corner 1-5.
Scorers: Louie (2), Luca, Alex, Joe.
Summary: It was a difficult day, a tough pitch to play football on, but credit to the boys they tried to play and keep the ball on the floor. Defended well when nescessary, we didn’t play the sparkling football we have come accustomed too, but got the job done and showed some moments of real quality.
M.O.T.M: Everyone played their part today, there wasn’t really any ‘stand out’ performances, all were steady and did their jobs in difficult circumstances. This weeks award goes to Luca, he finally got the goal his hard working performances have deserved, hopefully that will open to the door to a few more.
