A warm afternoon with plenty of sunshine in Sandy, as the newly formed Hurricanes got their league season underway against Mid Beds Tigers.
Straight from the kick off the away side, showed their intentions pressing the home team deep in their half and controlling possession. The deadlock was broken with only a few minutes on the clock. A sweetly delivered corner by Alex, and some great movement by Benji saw him meet the ball with perfect timing, to power a curling header in the bottom corner 0-1. A second soon followed again Alex the provider with a chipped pass over the top straight in the path of the on rushing Louie, who smashed the ball on the half volley in the net 0-2. The away side were sensing a chance to kill the game off, and were denied what looked a clear penalty when Louie was barged over in the box when clear through on goal. Still we didn’t have to wait long for a third, some good work by Joe on the right, fed Alex who from a full 20 yards out, saw his venomous right foot strike come off the under side of the bar and bounce over the line 0-3.
To their credit, the home side picked themselves up off the canvas, and started to make a game of it, Hayden was called in to his first action of the match, palming away a shot from the right hand edge of the box. The game was being contested more in the centre of the pitch. Again Louie was denied another penalty claim, clean through on goal and nudged the ball past the oncoming ‘keeper who’s momentum carried him straight in to Louie’s path and sent him tumbling to the ground, again the Referee waved play on. The fourth soon followed, good work by Joe down the right fed Louie, who’s shot was beaten away by the ‘keeper straight in the path of Alex who’s calm, controlled, side foot finish sailed over the stranded ‘keepers head and in 0-4. The final ten minutes of the half were fairly evenly contested as the away side dropped their tempo a little, and the home side got some reward for their endeavors, late in the half a pacy run down the right proved too hot to handle for the away defence, a low cross was stabbed home in the centre of the goal 1-4.
Half time team talk, was a positive one, we were pleased with the way had played, just not to try and force things so much in the final third of the pitch, be patient and wait for the right moments, and also we need to be a little more relaxed in front of goal. We spoke about the need to get the first goal of the half, to finish off any resistance.
The start of the second half emulated the first, the away side in control and the early goal came as Joe threaded a lovely weighted ball through for Benji to score his second, he picked his spot and rolled the ball past the ‘keeper 1-5. A sixth looked on the cards as the home side struggled to get out their half, this time Louie on the end of a Benji through ball, with a similar finish to the opposite corner 1-6.
It was a totally dominant second half display and more goals should have followed, chance after chance was created and in the most, fired wide by our misfiring striker! Who came the butt of the jokes for the sidelines, and was saved any further embarrassment by a timely substitution. A seventh eventually came a nice run and cross from Andrew was swept home by Alex to complete his hatrick 1-7. Again the home side rallied in the final stages of the half, and produced the goal of the game, a wonder strike from the left hand side of the box a fully 25 yards out, straight in to the top corner 2-7.
Summary: A great start to our league campaign, we played some lovely football and created lots of chances in an entertaining game. We did fade a little at the end of each half, as our intensity levels dropped, we just need to learn to be a little more solid in these fazes of games. A promising beginning for us to build from.
M.O.M: Alex, captain for the day, led by example, great energy and communication, 2 assists and a hatrick, a terrific all round display.
