Beaten in the final last season, this seasons cup competition started with a home draw against Wing Raiders Spartans, where we got the rub of the green last season the footballing gods didn’t shine us this season with about as tough a draw as we could have faced.

The game started under a dark cloud with rain looking imminent. Wing made a bright start, attacking down the right and pinning Whirlwinds back in their own half. After only a couple of minutes an attack down the right saw a cross come in and was finished at the far post 0-1. Wing looked dangerous and we’re looking to add to their tally but Whirlwinds weathered storm and found a foothold in the game. Gradually Whirlwinds started to keep possession and threaten in an attacking sense. Wing were now in a game and struggling to keep Whirlwinds at bay, twice a gilt edged chance was missed from two superb corner deliveries, the keeper pulled off a fine save from Ajiri and Jack M saw a 30 yard screamer whistle just wide. Wing looked dangerous on the counter, but Whirlwinds looked in control and on top. A bad mix up between the keeper and defender from our goal kick, almost a mirror image of a few weeks ago, gifted Wing a second 0-2. It was real kick in the teeth for Whirlwinds as it was against the run of play and at a point in the game where they threatening to equalise and push on. Heads dropped and a good move by Wing brought them a third 0-3. Halftime came just at the right time for Whirlwinds, as they were looking a little ragged.

HT 0-3

Half time team talk was surprisingly positive, think the team knew they hadn’t really done themselves justice and had again made a basic mistake just when we were on top in the game. We felt we could at least win the second half, try and get a goal and put some pressure on the opposition.

Whirlwinds went out in a positive frame of mind and it showed on the pitch, pushing Wing back and attacking well, limiting Wing to the occasional counter attack which in the main the Whirlwinds defence coped comfortably with. Whirlwinds were again on top with lots of attacking pressure Billy had a great downward header cleared off the line but chances were at a premium. A corner from Joe on the right was half cleared Ajiri brought it down around penalty spot, swivelled and shot, his goal bound effort took a deflection and left the keeper stranded 1-3. Buoyed by the goal and 2nd half display Whirlwinds suddenly saw a way back in to the game. Unfortunately this was all undone again by another mix up between defender and keeper that saw an innocuous cross bypassed them both and trickled across the goal line to be tapped in by a Wing attacker 1-4. A despondent Whirlwinds coasted through the final minutes of the game, Wing boosted by the goal got back on the front foot and one fine strike bounced back off the home teams bar. The final whistle blew and the cup dream was over, for this season anyway.

FT 1 -4

Summary : We really recovered well after conceding an early goal. Playing against a big physical side, which at times we struggled to cope with. Unfortunately two very bad defensive mistakes at critical times in the game were our downfall. We need to find a way to eradicate these as we are gifting the opposition goals far too regularly. However in general play we looked good enough to compete at a higher level. Good luck to Wing, they will take some stopping in this competition.

MOM – Jack C, another solid defensive display and used the ball well
