League Game

Final game of the winter season, and our first time playing Linslade, we have happy memories of the venue where we recorded our biggest win.

Prior to kickoff, we looked at a couple of tactics from goal kicks, throw-ins and corners, our set up and positioning. Also, challenging the players to take control of these situations.

We started quickly, lots of movement and slick passing. We created multiple chances, but snatched at shots on goal. The opposition keeper had a 10-15 minute spell where he seemed to keep the score level by himself. Equal to every shot, our frustration grew, and as we pushed forward looking for the opening goal, our defence was exposed and we conceded from long range. A second goal came just before the break, and for a successive week we trailed by 2.

TEAMTALK – we asked the players to continue playing the quick passing game that had seen us create the majority of our chances. Only, try not to rush our shots with power, but placement. When we have time, use it, and not wait for things to happen, make it happen. Lastly, we emphasised the pre match talk on certain tactics and the importance that the team work together at these moments.

Into the second half, and again we started brightly, Alannam and Ollie in particular would start the attacks and find teammates further forward, then look to join in and create an option.

Our words from halftime seemed to have some affect, as we levelled the game with two well placed finishes. The rest of the game was a see-saw battle as we conceded, then gained a 2 goal lead before again conceding to make for a nervy finish.

Such a great response from the whole team, at times the football and ultimately goals we were able to score on the day, showed just how far the group have come as individuals and a team. Lots of work still ahead, but the maturity and determination to keep playing regardless of the score or how long is left to play, is admirable in many fields beyond sport.
