The first frosty morning this year, the warms ups complete and the pitch in a great condition, we got the game underway with a good passing move and shot just wide.
However, we faced a team with a particular style, well disciplined, with each player seemingly knowing their role. In particular the left-sided midfielder, who found space well and delivered a variety of clever crosses. We defended the initial attacks well, but struggled to get the transition complete and build attacks of our own, often wanting too much time on the ball and inevitably conceded from 2 attacks before halftime.
TEAMTALK – seeing as we had struggled to build attacks in the first half, we asked the players to try something different at times. Defend as a unit, and wait for the opportunity to counter quickly. If we could stop the opposition from adding to their lead, and get the next goal in the game to put pressure and doubt on the opponents.
For the majority of the second half, we made a real game as attacks were shared by both teams, and both keepers had to make good saves. Unfortunately, we hit the post and the side netting twice before conceding ourselves.
A fine individual run and finish by Ollie was in the end a consolation as we conceded more goals before the end. Our heaviest defeat this term, and a couple of good lessons to take into training.

HOMEWORK – different teams will play with different styles. Counter attack, possession, long ball, tika-taka… but whatever style you choose to adopt will be most affective if all members of the team agree and do their part.
