First game of the season, and a familiar opposition away at Olney.
The team enjoyed good possession and were dominant in the middle of the field. Isaac offered a great outlet on the wing, often shielding the ball, waiting for support before releasing a runner. A similar move lead to the opening goal. When Ollies cross/shot found the far corner.
The lead was quickly doubled, and we were able to outnumber their defence when attacking, at times all that was missing was a ‘look up’ to see the great running into space from teammates.
After a shuffle of the team, we noticeably lost our shape, as we pushed forward to add to the lead, were caught by a quick counter and the lead was halved. We had to weather a storm for the last 5 mins of the half, limited the shots on goal, and a great blocked tackle by Alannam before Liam tipped a shot onto the post kept our advantage.
TEAMTALK – we asked the team to remember to keep shape and position. Not get drawn to the ball in numbers, and not try to do everything alone, as they would tire very quickly on the bigger pitch. Other than that, our message was the same as always – have fun, and play until the end of the game.
The second half saw us regain control of the game, this time there was no let up. We regained a 2 goal advantage by playing to the whistle, as the keeper stretched a hand to claim the ball, Riley poked the ball home.
More chances were created and taking, but I was really impressed by Joseph in attack, he’d made good runs all game and missed the target with a couple of 1 on 1’s. I asked him to try something different, and with the next chance he rounded the keeper, before finishing from a tight angle.
