SUNDAY 4th Sept. ROYSTON TOWN LADIES. (Friendly)

1pm KO . Dry but cloudy conditions . 5-3 lost, ( 3-3 with 5 mins to play)

Firstly can I say a great big thank you and well done to the group of Woburn Lionesses who turned out this morning to play the first ever Friendly Ladies Blues Game against a proper Royston Town Ladies team, LEANNE, AMY R, ASHLEY, CHLOE M, JESS, BRITNEY, CARRIE, AMY G, LIZZIE, LAUREN, CASEY, CHARLOTTE.

Also thanks to Neil Stewart and James for running our line! All credit to Royston for hosting this fixture which could so easily had been called off due to a lack of players ! They had no subs & we had players brought in from 2 other Lionesses teams.  But let’s just say Coach Pat was ‘proud as punch’ to see the brand new players  working their socks off to compete in a real hard Ladies game of football where nobody was willing to give an inch!

Good solid start from a new look back four of Ashley, Carrie, Britney & Jess who came under some early pressure but with the help of Amy, Lizzie,  Lauren & Casey the Lionesses stood firm, until a slightly harsh penalty was given by the local ref against Ashley who was adjudged to have clipped the ankle of the Royston forward. ( who sadly had to go off injured ) Hope her turned ankle is OK to start her new job Monday)

To everyones amazement the penalty was sent skyward over the bar giving the Lionesses even more confidence.

Then some good passing down the right from Ashley, Lauren & Lizzie gets the ball to Amy who moves it on to her left peg & bingo we get the break the Lionesses deserved. 0-1 up. Suddenly we had awoken the giant! As Royston were shocked into action, and very quickly went 3-1 ahead. looked like all the early signs were turning against us!

As normal though not many Woburn teams are ready to give in and roll over, so fight, grit, pressure in midfield and getting the ball to wide areas quickly brought Charlotte into the game upfront as our lone striker worked her socks off to chase and close down.

Amy again getting the space in the middle to get us back to 3-3 with 2 quick goals of our own. 3-3 would have been a fair result but due to Royston having no keeper and both teams down to 10 players both the Lionesses keepers Amy R & Leanne got to play for the last 30 mins at either end, making an exciting final 3rd. Both teams now with everyone playing and back to 11 v 11. Royston made the most of the Lionesses tired legs, as their physical strength starting to show, plus positional changes made by coach Pat to try and win the game with 5 mins to play , back fired slightly and gave 2 more quick goals to Royston who’s experienced showed to end up running out 5-3 winners all be it slightly against the run of play.

Fantastic advert for Lionesses football with all 12 Ladies getting a good run out with so many positives it was hard to even think of a player of the Match.

If you can’t give Player of match to all the Lionesses, then outstanding performances by Amy G.
