WWFC Hurricanes 1 – 8 Stony Stratford Town

Scorer: Asante

H/T Score:  0 – 4

Team: Evan; Charles, Freddie, Orlando, Rocco (c); Asante, Francis, Harry, Luke; Tao

Hurricanes returned to the comforts of home after their season had opened with a brace of away games. Their opponents were Stony Stratford, who had overcome the Lions to win 3-1 in last season’s encounter. Woburn were hoping for a change in fortune having been unlucky to lose by the same score against Two Mile Ash last week. Leon and Andy had a full squad to choose from so it was a familiar-looking line-up: Evan in goal; Rocco marshalling the defence alongside Francis, Orlando and Freddie with Charles, Luke, Harry and Asante in midfield and Ryan and Tao sharing forward duties.

Both teams started in a positive fashion, but Stony profited from a quick counter-attack from their no.9 to take an early lead. This seemed to galvanise the away side, who swept forward and quickly added another couple of goals to their tally, with their no.14 running the show up front and proving the difference between the teams. By now, superior Stony were looking to finish the contest before half-time but Woburn gamely held out. Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, another goal came before the whistle, and so it was 0-4 going into the break.

Following a tough team talk, the sides regrouped and battle recommenced. Woburn won the ball, sped upfield and reached the final third but in a carbon copy of the first half, Stony countered , ran through and scored to increase their lead within a minute. 0-5, no return. Further goals followed but to their credit Woburn did score the last goal of the game with a rocket from Asante following good build-up play from Harry and Tao. Soon after the final whistle blew with the score at 1-8, and weary Woburn congratulated the worthy winners. Next up would be another home match, this time against a new team for us in the league, Silverstone Racers Panthers – let’s hope our boys would be able to get off the starting grid quickly to put them in pole position for points!
