LUCKY LIONS PURR PAST PLUCKY PANTHERS

Following the Wander to Brickhill, Hurricanes headed for pastures new at Medbourne to face Tattenhoe Youth Panthers. Leon, Andy and Mitch were boosted by the returns of Harry and Evan, and although Freddie and Kian were still injured they both turned out to cheer on the team. Within a minute of the start, Woburn took the lead – Harry’s persistence stole the ball, and he threaded a pass through to Alphaeus who ran onto it and finished past the keeper. 0-1, the best possible start. Woburn then seemed to sit back on their slender lead and this allowed Tattenhoe to dictate the play, coming close on several occasions. Fortunately a combination of good defending and poor finishing kept the Hurricanes in front, when in truth the Panthers could have been at least level. Against the run of play, the Lions increased their lead as Mitchell played the ball down the touchline to Asante who not only kept it in but evaded a challenge and got to the byline. A peach of a cross found Luke for a tap-in at the back post. 0-2. Leon’s team now found their feet, and could have made it 3 before the break as Francis picked up the ball from Mitchell, exchanged passes with Asante and shot. The Panthers managed to block it, Alphaeus couldn’t turn it in, so at half-time it remained 0-2.

Once again Hurricanes made a fast start to the half, and increased their lead. Asante passed to Fareed, who strode forward and produced an inch-perfect pass for Alphaeus to do what he does. 0-3. Woburn had their best spell of the match and poured forward at will – another good move resulted in the inevitable goalmouth scramble but the ball would not drop to a claret and blue foot. Alphaeus then had a great opportunity for his hat-trick, but the keeper pulled off a stunning save to thwart him.

Midway through the half, the Panthers prowled up the pitch and won a corner, which somehow went straight in. 1-3, time for a fightback? Nope. Alphaeus was once again clean through but the Panthers last line of defence took him down, for a clear penalty. Once he had been put back together, Mitchell stepped up. He shot, the keeper saved! However, the Panthers had encroached into the box as he was taking it so the eagle-eyed referee placed the ball back on the spot. Second time, Mitchell made no mistake and fired the ball into the net. 1-4, final score, and the Lions had made it 3 wins in a row.

Full credit should go to the plucky Panthers who belied their lowly league position to really put Woburn under pressure at times. Nevertheless, the Lions go marching on to the final fixture before the festivities in fine fettle!
