Whirlwinds breeze through to next round
Whirlwinds faced a previously unknown team in this County Cup draw and so with little known about the opposition it was awaited with much anticipation.
The home side started very brightly with some trademark passing and movement. Indeed the game was only 90 seconds old when a delightful break from TC created space in the middle. His square ball received by Iyanu who turned and drove home with his left foot. 1-0 Whirwinds.
A nice opening goal to settle any nerves.
3 minutes in and Iyanu is off again, pace to burn. He smashes a shot at the keeper who parries, but Bruce is on hand and tucks it away. Great follow up play that. 2-0 Whirlwinds and looking comfortable.
After more good movement from Whirwinds they just can’t find the net! It is on 25 minutes when after a hectic spell for the visitors that the ball is chipped over to the back post where Jamie takes control and makes it three. 3-0 Whirlwinds.
The away team look all out and it is only another 5 minutes before they are undone again, conceding a soft penalty. Up steps Bruce. He looks composed. And he is. Smashing it home for the fourth. 4-0 Whirlwinds.
Half-time and a welcome breather for Athletico.
The second-half didn’t hold the same levels of concentration for Whirlwinds, who remained in control but could have claimed much more potentially. After a collecting their thoughts they return to some great inter-passing and soon Owen is on the score sheet with a great finish to take it to 5-0.
Frustrated, the away team can’t cope with the relentless driving runs from Iyanu and the deft touch of TC. With a few minutes to go, Iyanu battles his way through and rounds the hapless keeper to make it 6.
And so that was that. A comfortable 6-0 cup win and on to the second round.
The lads are in good form. Sound communication at the back from H through to CJ, Jamie, Conn and Abbott. Some wonderful triangles dowm the left from Guy, Shane and Nat. Huge and solid work rate from Andrew and Sam. All shaping up well, Jake’s quick feet and Tom S energy covering lots of ground. Keep building boys.
