Lionesses miss the chance to go top
In the end this was a hard fought draw between two evenly matched sides and for the second time in a month an hour of football couldn’t separate the teams. For the Lionesses it took their unbeaten run to six games this season.
But the Lioneses will be disappointed not to have capitalised on a host of first half chances to put the game beyond the visitors. The Dunstable keeper was by the far the busier although in truth few shots caused her much difficulty. Then, as so often happens in football, the team on top went a goal behind after failing to make their domination count. Dunstable took the lead with their striker netting at the third attempt, after Olivia made two oustanding close range saves in rapid succession. The half-time team talk included an inquest into why the opposition had been allowed to shoot at will repeatedly so close to goal without a challenge from any of the Lionesses.
The second half was mainly one-way traffic again and the Lionesses went close on several more occasions before the equaliser finally came. A neat lay off by Elizabeth on the left of the penalty area allowed Maisie to produce a great finish, calmly stroking the ball home with her left foot.
The home side had chances to win the game but had to settle for a point in the end. Most of the game was played 6v6 as Lionesses reduced their team to match the depleted Dunstable team following an early injury.
