HOME & AWAY….AT WOBURN

The derby game of the season on our second game in and we looked to keep our unbeaten streak going. The team seemed to start positively and piled on the pressure with an early shot from Ben going wide of the target. Billy then added to our chances with a half volley from the edge of the area. Dan then tried his luck from range after picking up the ball whilst being unmarked and saw his shot drift high and wide but it seemed the team were eager to win the bragging rights from the derby game.

The Whirlwinds then forced us back and won a corner and a great delivery was met with an almost perfect header that went just wide of the post, the score sat at 0-0. The teams were battling it out evenly in the middle of the park with both teams stopping each other playing the ball around. Whirlwinds then pressed and won another corner from some indecisive passing in the defence and a deflected shot, the ball was delivered again and we managed to scramble the ball away only for the ball to come back to our defence, with our defence making a mistake and breaking the cardinal sin of playing the ball across the area the ball was picked up by the striker and he slotted the ball passed and outstretched Archie W. THE SCORE 1-0.

The boys shook themselves off and played some good football with Dan getting through on several occasions to cross the ball to an empty box as we struggled to get support to hi, at pace, Billy then had another shot with the outside of his foot which went just wide of the target. There was then some slick passing in the midfield with and ball played inside from Ben to Billy who then played a perfect through ball to set Dan away for him to calmly lift the ball over the keeper into the net. THE SCORE 1-1.

Again the boys played the ball around with Cathal playing through to Dan who was finding his pace helping him clear of the defence on more than one occasion but only to have his shot saved, Jake then played Joe B through on the right who was closed down by the defender as he shot to win a corner just before the half time whistle. HALF TIME THE SCORE 1-1.

We spoke at half time about our formation and under the guidance of Jake we went back to our 1 holding midfielder which seemed to be having the desired effect with the whirlwinds having less time to play the ball around deep in defence. The boys pressed high with the extra man going forward helping shut down any passes out from the defence. Khaleeq ran wide and played a cross to Archie W who saw his shot pushed onto the crossbar by the keeper, The pressure seemed to be working with a crossfield ball knocked down for Billy to have another shot from distance and giving the boys confidence when going forward. Whirlwinds then played a few long balls forward and with our defence being caught wrong side Joe B was forced to save from close range pushing the ball wide for our defence to clear, the ball was played up field and setback for Cathal to play a ball over the top and Dan to pressure the defender to play the ball back to the keeper who could only head the ball back into his goal from the pressure Dan was putting him under. THE SCORE 1-2.

We then continued pressing forward with the boys no longer trying fancy flicks and Jake back holding things in front of the defence, whirlwinds pressed on the counter and caught our defence cold a few times and Joe V making a few last ditch tackles to stop shots, Cathal was finding some good positions and picked up the ball on the edge of the area and had a great shot that went just past the post but could easily of dropped in the side netting with a little less curl on the shot. Whirlwinds then pressed forward and gained a corner that was defended well but fell to a midfielder who struck the ball from the edge of the area and with Joe B seeing it late spilled the ball which dropped to the whirlwinds in a crowded 6 yard box for him to poke home catching Joe B as he scrambled down to try and block the ball. THE SCORE 2-2.

The team then put in shift with some great “dirty work” (tracking back) from Dan. Cathal, Khaleeq, Billy and Ben stopping the Whirlwinds gaining the upper hand over our injury stricken defence, with 6 minutes to go we pressed forward and won a corner, with Dan in the area dragging the tall defenders out of the way Jake delivered the corner in the box which the defence pushed away but only to the feet of Khaleeq who struck the ball low and hard through a crowd of legs and into the back of the net to give us the lead, THE SCORE 2-3.

We then pulled together and saw the remaining minutes of the game out and the boys kept the unbeaten streak going and walking away with the derby match bragging rights but rights that the Whirlwinds made the team work hard for and showed that both teams can play some amazing football and that WWFC have teams that can challenge within the leagues.
