Back to it!

It was a lovely warm and thankfully dry morning as we convened at our new home ground at Ridgmont Lower School. A very picturesque setting; all that was lacking were a few cows wandering across the pasture ….. sorry, pitch.

The girls lined up to play Newport Pagnell Swans for their first 9v9 match on a bigger pitch, with bigger goals and of course, the off-side rule (whatever that is?).

The opposition suggested 3 lots of 20mins which I think was a good choice to ease the girls in gently.

Olivia with the goal in her sights.

It was a pretty even match. Our defence were strong, seeing off any potential threats, as were the opposition. On one occasion Tayla was caught facing the wrong way with an attacker flying past her but somehow she managed to turn around and sprint in front of the attacker to close her down.

Katie too, while in a defensive position, skilfully saw off a potential threat, taking her attacker out of the danger zone and across to the corner.

Katie determined to keep the ball.

In case you were wondering, the goals this way.

Scoobs and Mollie constantly ran down any potential breaks, successfully redistributing the ball.

There was some nice interchange between Izzy and Olivia, with some thoughtful back-passing to wrong foot the defence. Kitty too demonstrated a lovely move, holding off on her run to negotiate off side successfully, while receiving the ball in full stride.

Kitty sandwich.

The manager/coaches’ Girl of the Match today was Maggie who was calmness personified in front of goal. She safely caught an impressively long high shot, keeping the score line at 0-0 and coolly dealt with any unexpected back passes (mentioning no names….Izzy!). There were also some great kicks out which hopefully, as the season progresses, our girls will be able to make good use of.

All in all, a good outing. Notably lots of foul throws but the ref was keen to give the girls another chance. We were a little sluggish on occasion but considering the lengthy summer break and with greater pitch time for all, really not bad at all. Well done!
