Hitchin vs WWFC

Hitchin Town Vs WW Ladies FC – Sunday 11th October 2015

Hitchin away was always going to be a very tough game – they’re a physical team who work hard to put themselves in positions to win matches and with our form leading in to the weekend, it looked like our losing run had the potential to continue for another week.

The day started well with 14 players available for selection. Two or three were carrying slight knocks, but made themselves available in an attempt to try to establish some form.

The game started very well; we dominated possession early on and made incisive attacks down both wings through Sharna and Lauren. It was clear that we had the edge in speed on the opposition defence and it looked like goals would come from this route. As the game progressed, Hitchin became more established in the game and started to create more opportunities – particularly down our left.

We continued to probe down the wings and pressure their defence which resulted in WW Ladies opportunity. Georgia got onto the ball 25 yards out from the goal, moved the ball onto her right foot and hit an absolute screamer over the keeper and into the top left corner of the goal. As we’ve come to expect from Georgia – a spectacular goal!

With the problems we were having down the left hand side we had to do some reshuffling. Sharna dropped back into LB to give us a little extra pace to deal with their wingers and within minutes we instantly felt more secure. Around 35 minutes Ashley was tackled late and fell hard on her elbow. It was a bad injury and needed attention from the team physios. Fortunately she got up and played on although she played the rest of the game with her arm held delicately across her body – what a battler!

At half time the team were upbeat but exhausted! They had worked tirelessly closing down everything – they were first and second to every ball.

The second half started with Hitchin picking up the pace and attacking in a more direct fashion with balls angled in from central midfield regularly. Still, with our back four of Sharna, Mollie, Higgsy and Ash, we looked strong – added to that Kim mopping up everything dangerous in front of the defence. WW Ladies soaked up all the pressure and before long started to exploit the wings again through Dom and Lauren – both putting in very impressive performances.

Midway through the second half and having weathered the Hitchin storm WW Ladies started to create more threatening opportunities. Kim dribbled through the heart of the Hitchin midfield before playing the perfect left-footed slide-rule pass through for Georgia. With just the keeper in front of her, Georgia took the ball brilliantly into her stride and lobbed the keeper from the edge of the area – another SPECTACULAR goal!

10 minutes to go and WW Ladies were feeling comfortable – too comfortable! For the first time in the game Hitchin were given space in central midfield and took the opportunity to shoot from the 20 yards out. Charlie had no chance to get anywhere near the ball and the ball flew into the top corner.

5 minutes to go and tempers were flaring. A number of innocuous incidents followed which resulted in ‘disagreements’ and ‘handbags’. However, Woburn regained their composure quicker and managed to see out the rest of the game.

It was hard to choose POM: Ashley’s resilience, Georgia’s two sensational goals, Kim’s composure in front of the defence, Charlie’s rock solid game in goal and Mollie’s last ditch tackles when a goal felt inevitable. However, to me it felt like the game changed when Sharna dropped in to LB. She was solid in defence, making tackle after tackle but she also managed to get forward narrowly missing a goal when she hit the post. So:

POM – Sharna

A great win and very well deserved.

Houghton vs WWFC Ladies

Woburn played very well for 40 minutes with numerous chances being created down the right-hand side of the pitch. The quality of the football was good but goals eluded the team. On 15 minutes, we were caught by a counter attack from Houghton with the ball being knocked long, catching the centrebacks out before beating Jess. Play resumed with us controlling the ball for large periods but we were unable to find the final pass to truly challenge the goalkeeper. On 42 minutes we were caught on the counter attack again – Mollie caught their striker with the faintest of touches which resulted in Houghton slotting home from the penalty sport. In between goals, Jess made a few really good saves at important times.

At half time we had to change formation in order to try and get after the game.

The second half was less than pleasing… very few passes were actually completed and we went from controlling parts of the game to being overrun. Several players at this point were going through the pain barrier to play and eventually Kim had to take a break. Jess came on pitch at centreback and Charlie made her Ladies Goalkeeping debut. She went into goal and looked incredibly confident and was by no means afraid of the situation – commanding and vocal!

Hitchin away in two weeks will be a tough test – we need to get things sorted by then.
