Wheathampstead FC

AWAY League Game – Wheathampstead v Lionesses SUN. 26/2/17

Squad: Leanne, Britney, Carrie, Amy R, Alice, Casey, Nikita, Amy G, Lauren, Madison, Georgie.

A very cold  windy afternoon in LU1 today for this important fixture for the Lionesses who had not played for 2 weeks .

Game switched to an Astro-Turf pitch last minute made it even more difficult for the Blues to stay focused and even the ref was trying to make it seem even more difficult! (The Girls know what I mean)

The first half started with the Blues trying to get the passing game going but the weather conditions were always going to play a part in this game. It took Amy 22 minutes to hit the target even though she was ill all week you would never have known.

The first half seemed to go on for ever with chances for both teams at both ends, Leanne was called into action far too many times for the Blues bench, but was keeping us ahead by the skin of are teeth! Half ended 0-1, so close and all to play for!

The Blues were being made to work very hard by the home team kept out by Leanne, Britney, Captain Carrie, Alice & ‘Out of position’ Amy doing a sterling job helping defend our goal.

On 48minutes Georgie made it 0-2,  to settle us down slightly, but the Blues had to dig deep to pull this one off, show great character and a never say die attitude especially from Madison , Nikita, Casey. Great credit to the Girls for working so hard and sometimes it did not look very pretty, but the result was more important than the performance today.

On 66 minutes Amy got her second and our 3rd, and Casey added to it on 72 minutes to seal the deal! But Wheathampstead were still fighting and got what they deserved on 88 minute a goal for the impressive no.18.

I must say I thought I had seen it all but the Girls never cease to amaze us with there committment and inner strength to do what seems to be impossible. Respect!

P.O.M  – Leanne.

Pat & Steve.

Evergreen Eagles

LIONESSES v Evergreen Eagles FC at Aspley Guise 29/01/17 2pm KO. Attendance: 24 Conditions: wet, cold, grey, perfect for a good game of football!

Billed as the ‘Top of the table clash!’ and it did not disappoint!!

This was the first time these two teams had met and we knew it was going to be a tough one. After some soul searching from the Lionesses after last weeks under par performance in the cup, it was time to show some real character and bounce back quickly to winning ways  (although I think it was good for us to have such a hard game last week! ) So it did not look good when within 2 minutes of the start we gifted them a goal with some shall we say casual defensive play. 0-1! Time to roll up the sleeves and show some spirit, 2 minutes later Amy had a shot which the Evergreen keeper miss judged and it bounced over the line! (How lucky was that?) 1-1 after 5minutes, back to nil – nil came the cry from the Lionesses dugout, it looked like it was going to be end to end stuff and so it was. We had to be solid at the back but this was not easy on a very wet fast pitch where made it easy to make a mistake on. Our back four of Britney , Jade , Rachel , and Alice were made to work very hard by the Evergreen front two who made it clear they knew where the Woburn goal was!

Amy started to find her range & and on 21minutes the Lionesses got their noses in front for the first time, 2-1, 5 mins later Amy got half a yard and did it again 3-1.

Everyone was pulling together and the flowing quick passing football started to return to our play as we relaxed slightly and broke from the midfield down both wings with some pin point passes from Carrie, Casey & Amy, which gave Lauren , Madison & Georgie license to use their pace and shooting abilities.

The Evergreen goal keeper & defence had other ideas and were making some great tackles and saves, the half ended after Madison got her goal to make it 4-1 to the Lionesses ( slightly flattering as explained at half time by Manager and Coach! )

Evergreen were never going to give up and it was overheard that they were told they were ‘still in it!’ You bet they were!!! as even when coach Pat had said we now have to win the second half we decided to let them score on the 47th & 55th minute to allow them to get right back in it! 4-3!!!!! With much too long still to play the momentum was now with them going down the famous Aspley slope.

The next 20 minutes felt like forever! As they threw the kitchen sink & a few fantastic corners at us.

Thank god Amy was not finished as although she had her hat-trick she still wanted more and made  it 5-3 on 63mins just to settle down the home crowds nerves. Well played to both Millie & Nikita for playing an important part in this very tight but important fixture. We needed 13 talented squad players to win this and they did it.

Final score 5-3 which seemed much closer than the score suggests and sets up a return game at Evergreen in a few weeks. A really competitive game from 2 very good teams who both wanted to win!

Team dedicated the victory to Lizzie Richardson who could not be with us today as she was on special professional duties in London. Full story soon ! (congrats to her, all at Woburn proud, but hope to see her soon! )

P.O.M. EVERGREEN – The Goal keeper with some very good shot stopping & reaction saves!

Thanks to all the pre & after match helpers for making it a successful afternoon for the home team.

Shefford Town & Campton

Shefford Town v Lionesses Away game 2pm KO Attendance:15

Sunny , cold afternoon perfect pitch in perfect condition.

Two very late calls about player availability had the Lionesses up against it. With only 10 players against the full squad from Shefford this was going to be interesting to say the least! Last minute formation changes meant playing a 3-2-3-1 the seasonal Christmas tree formation as Steve called it.

The Lionesses did not let the formation worry them although it took time to adjust on this very wide pitch it did suit the Lionesses. Some great runs from CASEY & LAUREN up both wings were a handful for there defenders. LEANNE was playing it out from the back to try and keep us possession, and it worked!

It was hard work all round and it took Some clever passing with pace for AMY to get her eye in with a great left foot strike on 26mins. To give the Lionesses a well earned 0-1 lead.

ALICE & BRITNEY along with RACHEL were playing intelligently at the back to use the ball very creatively which gave GEORGIE  time to run at the defence and get a great shot off that bent into the far corner of the net (35 mins ) to make it 0-2.

All the Lionesses were giving 110%, we could not ask anymore from any of them, we surely would not be able to keep this up?  Half time came not a moment to soon. 0-2

Second half going up the slight slope, again we needed to believe in each and let the ball do the work as the big pitch was killing us!

With us tiring  they started to get forward in numbers and the magnificent 10 had to dig so deep. We then got a direct free kick on the right hand side 25 yards out, RACHEL range! shouts of have a shot! So she did, 52mins into the game , she hit it with her right, it bounced right in front of the diving keeper & under her into the corner ! 0-3

With no fresh legs, and all hands already on deck! The pace and tempo had to slow down ,they used there subs wisely and on 70 mins they breached the solid Lionesses defence of BRITNEY, RACHEL, ALICE , CARRIE , & LIZZIE to get one back.

Could we hold on! GEORGIE believed we could and managed to stem any thoughts of a come back by putting it beyond doubt by getting her second on 81 mins . Game over . Thanks to Shefford for a good game and the hospitality. ( Hope the Captains back will be OK! )

Pride, Passion, Passing, Pace. Well done to the magnificent 10 for showing all four of the P’s.

Potters Bar United FC

Match Report. Potters Bar v Lionesses Blues

Attendance: 24 –  ideal conditions, great pitch wide but very short! Right next to club house & hot drinks!

After the tough clash at the Guise where we lost Jade to a nasty injury it was always going to be tough going to the Bar on their own turf!

A great game in prospect was made difficult for the home team with them only having 10 players. Lionesses were warned that this was not going to be easy. 10 players can play better than 11! The Bar were up for some revenge and therefore were very dangerous.

The travelling Lionesses having negotiated the M1 & M25 with nearly a hours drive each way, furthest away game by miles, got straight at the home team, ploughing forward at every opportunity looking to pass and move. The pitch did not help the away team as we kept over hitting the final ball on a short pitch!  Not used to this it became frustrating, the final killer ball kept getting away from us. CASEY with the help of LAUREN and LIZZIE’S passes started to make some good runs down the right with some great crosses finally found AMY in the box who finished a well crafted double header off the bar ending up in the net after 9 minutes.

An own goal after another set piece got us 0-2 up , very unlucky for the home team, but good for the Lionesses.

Half time 0-2 The 4 p’s came into play Pride, Passion, Passing & Pace we needed to find them all.

All to play for, it was becoming a battle of the midfield and the pace slowed down to a shells pace but hey!! it then suited them & took us 70 mins for GEORGIE to make it 0-3, AMY pops up to make it 0-4 on 76 mins after a dead leg !

Great work at the back with BRITNEY , CARRIE, RACHEL & ALICE holding firm against the Potters formidable strike force! EMILY gave us fresh legs in the wide positions  which they did not have the luxury of.

MADISON was working hard to get around the back and expose the Potters defence getting a bruised foot for her efforts.

On 86 mins GEORGIE gets her second well deserved goal 0-5, still time for RACHEL ( POM ) to run from deep and kept running to slot home a low drive passed the Bar keeper. 0-6 game over.

Well done the Squad for a performance that pushes us back to the top and gets us 3 precious points, and no serious injuries.

Thanks to AMY R for giving us cover for late injury worry LEANNE as she doubled as GK and outfield.

This one was for you Jade! for a quick as possible recovery.

Final thanks to Potters Bar for the hospitality of The Chequers pub for some hot refreshments after the game. ( The goalkeepers Mum & Dad run the pub & support the team with after match refreshments! ) A good team with a good set up.

Lino Neil , have a good course Monday night !
