WOBURN SHOW STEEL AGAINST OAKLEY
Welcome, dear reader, welcome to the new 2016/7 season! The boys are now playing 11-a-side, with halves of 35 minutes each, so Leon and Andy have recruited some additional players. A warm Woburn welcome to Fareed, Kian and Mitchell!
The Hurricanes now find themselves in Division 3 of the MKDDL, following the organisation’s decision to hold grading games between teams drawn at random – a decision which Yes Minister’s Sir Humphrey Appleby (ask your parents, kids) might have termed ‘brave’. Let’s review these games right here, right now: a defeat against Sundon Park Rangers (from last season’s Chiltern League Division 1, now placed in MKDDL Division 1), and a heavy defeat against Winslow Utd Lions (a team formed from two other MKDDL Division 1 teams, also now placed in MKDDL Division 1). This second game was on Silent Saturday, so let’s delve a little deeper with a full match report:-
Following a relatively even first half, where we trailed 3-2, Winslow ran away with the game in the second half eventually inflicting a 10-2 defeat on the Hurricanes. As a great manager (Brian McDermott) once said, we move on.
Now let us never speak of those games again…
Anyway, onto the league season. Hurricanes made the journey to deepest Bedfordshire to play AFC Oakley Steelers on the ground where Woburn finished runners-up in this summer’s mini-tournament. Although the boys lined up without Alphaeus (henceforth shortened to Alf) and Kian, spirits were high during the warm-up under the grey skies.
Woburn started well but a defensive mix-up saw Oakley take the lead. This seemed to galvanise the Hurricanes and soon after an Asante corner went straight in to make it 1-1 at half-time. Second half Woburn stepped up a gear and within 10 seconds of the restart were in the lead – Fareed took the ball down the wing to the byline, rifled in a cross and Tao poked home. Soon it was 3 and once again Fareed was the provider, setting up Mitchell who smashed home from distance!
It wasn’t all one-way traffic, and at the mid-point of the half Oakley had a route back into the game. An innocuous challenge in the box was punished with a penalty to the home team, but Evan stood firm against the diminutive no. 7, saved the spot-kick and forced the rebound to be fired wide. 1-3 it stayed. The Lions sealed the points from another set piece as Jeremy‘s corner was blocked, Asante lifted the ball back in and Harry headed home. Final score 1-4, and Woburn are off and running!
