The highly anticipated curtain raiser arrived on Saturday with Crawley Green coming to town and on the back of an impressive preseason confidence and expectation was high.
In the opening exchanges it was Crawley Green that were the brighter all over the pitch and the harsh reality being The Clarets were lucky to go only the one goal down after 20 minute not moving the ball quick enough and being slow to every ball!!…but somehow they managed to create a couple of chances one of which Emily D stayed calm enough in front of goal to lift the ball over the keeper to take the Clarets in at the break all square.
With Jason’s words of wisdom ringing in the girls ears they were transformed driven on by an outstanding 2nd half display from Parents Player Emily D who destroyed Crawleys Greens left back every time she went forward. Lucy made it 2-1 early in the 2nd half typically showing more strength and desire than her defender and coolly slot the ball home from the edge of the box.
Crawley like the Clarets in the first half somehow clawed their way back into the game with The Clarets switching off at the back and after being given several chances to clear they gifted Crawley an equaliser!
This stirred the girls back into life and with Maddison’s craft and the ball winning tenacity of Georgia and Alesha The Clarets started taking control again.
Erin started to become her usual dominant force and with Ella S gliding through the gears showing yet another consistently good performance space was opening up all over the pitch which suited the Clarets flair players especially Chloe dancing past people at will and Zoe’s brilliance on the ball proofing too much for Crawley Green and they soon made the pressure pay when Ella B strode through the Crawley defence and showed great maturity and confidence having missed a few early chances to keep her head slamming the ball past the advancing keeper to nudge The Clarets into a slender lead!!
Crawley Green briefly rallied for an equaliser and forced Emily W into a brilliant save from a smartly taken free kick, but they remained strong at the back brilliantly marshalled by Lana on a hugely impressive league debut.
In the final minutes Zoe sealed the victory breaking free and firing a shot past the keeper to make the final score 4-2 a score line that to be honest was a little flattering with the Clarets knowing that they will need to produce for the full 60 minutes as better opposition may have punished their sluggish start!
