STMA - 10 Hitchin Rd, Shefford SG17 5JA
League

First league game of the season, a trip to Shefford, sun was shining, pitch in tip top condition, what a great way to start our league campaign.

Shefford are always tough opponents, they move the ball around well, and have a threat up front. It was the home side who dominated the early proceedings, with most of the threat coming down the right, Whirlwinds completely on the back foot and just trying to stay in the game. A corner dropped to their striker, he fired straight at Nathan who blocked the shot. Nathan again called in to action, a superb flying save to his right from a powerful shot that looked destined to nestle in the top corner.

Whirlwinds gradually started to settle in the game, Oliver dropping in and stopping the threat down the right, allowed them to get on the ball and counter attack, Ajiri and Ibu, running at pace started to cause Shefford some defensive problems, Ajiri sending a shot just over. From the next raid they took the lead, Billy broke up play in the centre pushed it to Ajiri, who darted down the left, he turned back and laid off to the supporting Oliver, who played a diagonal cross for Ibu to side foot in to the net at the back post 0-1.

The goal gave the away team a confidence boost, with the threat down the right now nullified by Jake and Oliver, the rest of the defence looked settled and resilient, it gave them the platform to break quickly, Sam buzzing around linking the play, Whirlwinds finished the half in much better fashion than they started it.

HT: 0-1

Half time team talk, concentrated on just being a little more disciplined in midfield, this would give us a much better platform to get forward quickly.

The second half got underway, Whirlwinds now looking really solid, Shefford still enjoying plenty of possession but finding it tough to get any joy in getting past the Whirlwinds midfield, it was the away team who were carrying much more of an attacking threat Oliver, desperately unlucky to see his flicked shot come off the bar. Both Ajiri and Ibu were causing havoc with their pace and trickery. They got the reward they deserved Sam  playing a perfectly weighted defence splitting pass, to send Ajiri racing clear and place the ball in the corner of the goal 0-2.

Sam revelling in the ‘no.10’ role, then set Ibu clear, racing in on goal with keeper advancing, he knocked ball past him, to see it agonisingly go inches past the post. Shefford were now carrying little goal threat, their striker growing increasingly frustrated, should have been in the Ref’s book after twice kicking out at Whirlwinds players. Ajiri picked up a loose ball at the edge of the box, chested it down and hit a ferocious half valley, which thumped back off the post. Another great cross by Sam, found Oliver in the box, he tangled with the keeper, the ball broke lose to Ajiri who lashed it in to back of the net 0-3.

Shefford had a good chance to get on the scoresheet, a corner broke to their striker, but Nathan again made an important stop. It was their only attempt on goal in the entire half.

FT: 0-3

Scorers: Ajiri (2), Ibu

M.O.T.M: Sam – linked the midfield and attack superbly.
