Cyclones today get a friendly match away to Willen FC Rangers after missing a friendly and our league match last week due to the freezing weather,Willen have always given us a good game and so would be a good test for the boys today.
Today we only had a squad of 11 Charlie unfortunately had a bad arm injury at school which hopefully will not keep him away for to long.
Warming up for the game was positive the boys seemed to be pleased also to get a game after the weeks off and warmed up Aaron especially looked like he had his shooting boots on.
So we spoke to the boys about starting with quick tempo, using the full size of the pitch and not let the opposition have time on the ball.
They must of listened because as soon as Willen took kick off the boys closed them down quickly and Aaron was fed through and as I mentioned he had his shooting boots on and he hit it across the goal and past the diving keeper 0-1 cyclones great start.
Aarons smile said it all he was happy with that he certainly started this game like he finished the last game against new city which earned him the captains arm band this week.
We then continued to ply some nice attacking play and defended well but we still wasn’t completely in control,Willen were playing some nice passing also.
We then got our second goal some nice passing from the boys and a lovely little dink over the defence and keeper from Sam to finish the move off, terry and myself from our angle thought it was going over but good news for Sam he got his deserved goal.
We had several chances during the first half keeper saving some the defence clearing the ball with last ditch tackles and some off targets shots also.
Willen also had a few chances but the defence and Korban seemed to get away it the Willen striker would loved to have had Aaron’s boots today it just wasn’t his day thankfully.
So half time it ended 0-2 to the cyclones.
Team talk was positive we liked the passing and movement the team work but we still wanted the boys just to do that little more we seemed to lack bite in the middle of the park we left some gaps and we needed to limit the chances to the opposition would we get away with the efforts given to Willen in league 2 ? Probably not.
So we started the second half well again passing the ball well using the width and working quick movement training is certainly paying off
We then got a 3rd goal Aaron again finishing the move but to be fair Sam he was unlucky not to get the goal but Aaron and his new predator instinct did.
Sam was unlucky again for our 4th goal a great run from the right coming in chipping the out coming keeper to hit the post but again Aaron was there to score completing his hat-trick.
We then started really attacking the Willen half and had several more chances and to be fair willen still continued to try and get a goal and they finally got what the deserved they counter attacked fro our corner our midfield didn’t track back and the willen player was one on one with Morgan and we had only just moved Morgan back into defence after a spell in midfield and he struggled to keep the willen player from slotting the ball past Korban, certainly not blaming him for it but he was a little disappointed but he shouldn’t be he was running his socks off before that maybe a mistake from us leaving him last man after all that running.
In all a great performance after a 2 week break and lots of positive from the boys.
Aaron again showed us his finishing,Alex again was solid in every position,Callum and john looked comfortable and the pair of them had some good runs from the back,Sam who got his goal he’s been desperate to get but his engine and team work rate was great again and Alfie certainly showed us again and again today how to control the ball switching the ball from side to side and running through the centre.
Though today Bailey and Malik for us get the special mention.
Malik in training is a menace Callum never enjoys playing against Malik always tells me he’s tricky and strong for his size and we have been telling him this over the last weeks and today we finally got to see his skills as well as the physical ability we see in training especially coming back and getting the ball once he lost it,keep it up Malik.
Bailey today started on the subs bench but as soon as he came on today he showed us that he wanted to prove to us that we should have started him today he was full of confidence with the ball and some of his passing and team play was great to see he worked hard in defence and attack working well in the several positions he played in and even had a few first time shots we we have tried to get him to do rather than dribble through the defence, again Bailey please keep this up and hopefully the same attitude, determination and attitude to every game and training session.
In all a good result, run out and test for the boys we thank willen again for the tough test and wish them well for the rest of the season hopefully see you again for another friendly in pre season.
