Sharnbrook FC

Another challenging friendly in a double header at the Guise today. A 14 player squad took to the Common to Try and give SHARNBROOK women’s FC a run for their money.

Well done to the Lionesses for giving a good account of ourselves amid some very experienced Ladies. 1-5 was a positive for the young Lionesses who were 4 down in the first half trying to find there feet and  play some football under great pressure and no time on the ball. Credit goes to : LEANNE, BRITNEY, JADE, SCARLETT, ALICE, VICKY, NIKITA, AMY, ABBIE, CASEY, GEORGIE, MILLIE, MADISON, CHLOE.

1st half – was not our finest, but give them credit their tactics were spot on! But I will not go on about that. Learning curve!

2nd half – we found our way and best formation to Penatrate their defences who I must say were very tight at the best of times. Amy found the back of the net in the end with a well deserved goal which was helped with some great build up play from Chloe, Casey, Madison, Abbie, Jade. ( between you and me – I think we won the second half!!)

To sum up – when we pass it using quick one two’s we look very good . When we just kick it without thinking, we just end up giving them the ball back.  We learnt a few things today , which is why we only play top teams in friendlies! So heads up high girls as along way to go yet!! Some nice footy and new players finding their feet!

Remember it’s not the score that counts in friendlies, it’s the way you try and go about your football!

Royston Town

1pm KO . Dry but cloudy conditions . 5-3 lost, ( 3-3 with 5 mins to play)

Firstly can I say a great big thank you and well done to the group of Woburn Lionesses who turned out this morning to play the first ever Friendly Ladies Blues Game against a proper Royston Town Ladies team, LEANNE, AMY R, ASHLEY, CHLOE M, JESS, BRITNEY, CARRIE, AMY G, LIZZIE, LAUREN, CASEY, CHARLOTTE.

Also thanks to Neil Stewart and James for running our line! All credit to Royston for hosting this fixture which could so easily had been called off due to a lack of players ! They had no subs & we had players brought in from 2 other Lionesses teams.  But let’s just say Coach Pat was ‘proud as punch’ to see the brand new players  working their socks off to compete in a real hard Ladies game of football where nobody was willing to give an inch!

Good solid start from a new look back four of Ashley, Carrie, Britney & Jess who came under some early pressure but with the help of Amy, Lizzie,  Lauren & Casey the Lionesses stood firm, until a slightly harsh penalty was given by the local ref against Ashley who was adjudged to have clipped the ankle of the Royston forward. ( who sadly had to go off injured ) Hope her turned ankle is OK to start her new job Monday)

To everyones amazement the penalty was sent skyward over the bar giving the Lionesses even more confidence.

Then some good passing down the right from Ashley, Lauren & Lizzie gets the ball to Amy who moves it on to her left peg & bingo we get the break the Lionesses deserved. 0-1 up. Suddenly we had awoken the giant! As Royston were shocked into action, and very quickly went 3-1 ahead. looked like all the early signs were turning against us!

As normal though not many Woburn teams are ready to give in and roll over, so fight, grit, pressure in midfield and getting the ball to wide areas quickly brought Charlotte into the game upfront as our lone striker worked her socks off to chase and close down.

Amy again getting the space in the middle to get us back to 3-3 with 2 quick goals of our own. 3-3 would have been a fair result but due to Royston having no keeper and both teams down to 10 players both the Lionesses keepers Amy R & Leanne got to play for the last 30 mins at either end, making an exciting final 3rd. Both teams now with everyone playing and back to 11 v 11. Royston made the most of the Lionesses tired legs, as their physical strength starting to show, plus positional changes made by coach Pat to try and win the game with 5 mins to play , back fired slightly and gave 2 more quick goals to Royston who’s experienced showed to end up running out 5-3 winners all be it slightly against the run of play.

Fantastic advert for Lionesses football with all 12 Ladies getting a good run out with so many positives it was hard to even think of a player of the Match.

If you can’t give Player of match to all the Lionesses, then outstanding performances by Amy G.

WW Ladies FC vs Evergreen Eagles FC

SQUAD: Jade M (GK), Ashley (RB), Abbie R (CB), Charlotte (CB), Mollie (LB), Emily S (CDM), Jay (CM), Gwen (CM), Eddie (AMR), Georgia H (AML), Christie (CF), Alice (Sub), Lucy (Sub), Dom (Sub), Jessica (Sub), Lauren (Sub)

Player of the Match: Eddie (Georgia) –Two goals early on in the first half from Eddie effectively secured the game for the WW Lionesses.

Key Moment – Lucy Higgs glorious assist on the 80th minute – a lofted chip with reverse side which just checked into the path of Dom for a fine finish.

Match Report

The visit of Evergreen Eagles to the Common provided the WW Lionesses with an opportunity to improve on their performance from the reverse fixture.

The opposition arrived under-strength which enabled the WW Lionesses forwards to run the EE defence ragged. Within 15 minutes Eddie (Georgia), playing on the right wing., had scored two goals. Over the next 20 minutes WW Lionesses had a further 12 opportunities on goal which weren’t converted. EE seized on this and with only two players in the box they managed to convert their one chance on goal. With the score at 2-1 the WW Lionesses tightened up and failed to keep possession for much of the rest of the first half.

The half time team talk revolved around keeping the ball and making the opposition work harder. Throughout the first half we were two passes off being lethal…

Within seconds of the second half starting the ladies looked much more focused and the passing was much more crisp.

Gwen scored a great goal from the edge of the box (moving her to third in the League for goals).

Dom found herself through on goal, having gone passed the keeper, only to be denied by the EE goalkeeper grabbing her and throwing her to the floor. A penalty was awarded and Alice stepped up – and from only one step –  kept up her record of not missing penalties.

Minutes later, another penalty was awarded. This time Jay stepped up to the spot and buried the ball past the goalkeeper.

On the 80th minute, the moment of the match came. The ball was cleared by the EE defenders from a WW corner. Lucy met the ball on the halfway line and chipped the ball over the opposition midfield and defence perfectly for Dom to meet ultimately finish.

Good result – great second half.

Tough game next week against the league leaders who haven’t lost a league match this season. Big match players needed! Who’s going to step up in training this week?!

AFC Dunstable

SQUAD: Jade M (GK), Ashley (RB), Abbie R (CB), Jessica B (CB), Becca (LB), Chloe A (CDM), Jay (CM), Mollie (CM), Lauren (AMR), Georgia H (AML), Dom (CF), Christie (Sub), Lucy (Sub), Gwen (Sub), Charlotte (Sub), Emily S (Sub

Player of the Match: Gwen W – Came on as a sub and scored four goals and is 3rd top scorer in the division – not bad for a central midfielder!

Player of note: Chloe A – Only days past her 16th birthday, Chloe played her first game of Ladies football. Strong and consistent – rarely a foot or a pass out of place.

GOALS: Gwen 4, Lauren 3, Christie 3, CHARLOTTE 1 (NOT A TYPO), Emily 1

Match Report

At -1 degrees and thick fog, the conditions weren’t ideal for football today but as usual Aspley held up well to the conditions.

WW Ladies started off well but lacked a little patience and composure and despite having the better possession and chances, we went 1 – 0 down to Dunstable’s first shot on goal. It was just what was needed though and Woburn responded quickly with two goals in 2 minutes.

Lauren terrorised their throughout the game, both creating and scoring goals.

Two more goals followed in the next five minutes which ensured WW went in to the changing rooms in control of the game, Christie using her pace to get onto a through ball and clinically slotting in to the bottom corner from just inside the box.

Half Time: WW Ladies 4 – AFC Dunstable Blues 1

The second half saw some outstanding football played by WW Ladies with Jay and Gwen pulling all the strings in midfield. Charlotte started the scoring off in the second half with a 30 yard screamer (well that’s what it’ll be by Wednesday training!). Christie and Lauren both completed their hat-tricks in the second half only to be surpassed by the performance of Gwen – with four exquisite goals.
